Supreme Court Strikes Down Texas Abortion Law

On Monday, the Supreme Court overturned a Texas law requiring clinics that provide abortions to have surgical facilities and doctors to have admitting privileges at a nearby hospital. The court ruled that the law violated the Constitution and it was a 5-3 decision.

Due to the Supreme Court overturning this law, local women's health facilities in Texas including Planned Parenthood can continue to provide abortions without needing to have surgical facilities.

While women's health facilities don't need to have surgical facilities, they will be required to meet a number of safety requirements in order to provide abortions. Had the Texas law been upheld, it would have required over half of the state's abortion clinics to close according to Pete Williams of MSNBC.

The controversial topic on abortions is a heated one, with 12 other states having similar laws to Texas'.

Idaho doesn't currently have strict abortion laws, however if our state were to have laws similar to those overturned in Texas, Planned Parenthood locations would have to upgrade their facilities to hospital-like standards and doctors performing abortions would be required to have admitting privileges at local hospitals in the Treasure Valley.
