Mitt Romney announced today that he would not seek the GOP Nomination for the Presidency in 2016.  Romney made the announcement this morning.
"After putting considerable thought into making another run for president, I've decided it is best to give other leaders in the party the opportunity to become our next nominee," Romney told supporters on a conference call.
I had originally thought that Mitt Romney would run again after failing to win in 2008 and 2012.  He was too good, too smooth, and most importantly was right about several issues in 2012.  Anyone who doubts Romney's appeal should watch the Netflix documentary on him.  The third time was not a charm for another Romney run.  Here's why:
The dynamic of the race changed when Jeb Bush finally decided to run.  He and Mitt come from the same branches of the GOP.  A protracted primary fight between the two would drain both of valuable resources and possibly clear the path for a more conservative candidate to win.  Romney waited too long to get the band back together, and when he did move, he found out that Bush had grabbed some of his heavy hitters.
The second reason is one that has plagued the former Massachusetts Governor for most of his campaigns.  He flip-flops on the issues.  Voters in Iowa, New Hampshire, and South Carolina would be inundated with multiple video loops of Romney denying that he would ever run again.  How can one overcome their words?  Their own past?  It's too big of a hurdle to climb, and the Bush forces would hit him with it until he wished he kept his word.
I believe we all lost when Romney could not beat Obama in 2012.  He was right about Russia, ISIS, and the economy.  However being right is not enough to win the road to the White House in 2016.
