Meridian police were called to the home of Officer Heath Tuesday evening for another reason, but during a conversation with Compton, officers observed he appeared intoxicated.
"We were able to determine he had been driving before we arrived and began an investigation for driving under the influence," said Tracy Basterrechea, assistant chief for the Meridian Police Department.
Compton was taken to the Ada County Jail, where he was charged with excessive driving. Compton's alleged blood alcohol level was not publicly released.
Compton is a 19-year veteran with the Garden City Police Department, was later released from custody. He is scheduled to appear in Ada County Court on Nov. 24.
Compton pleaded guilty once before for drunken driving. He was convicted in July 2005 for an incident that occurred Dec. 19, 2004.
