EUGENE, Ore. (AP)- A cluster of 8 earthquakes shook northwestern Nevada overnight, about 40 miles southeast of the Oregon town of Lakeview and east of the California border.

The cluster started just after 6 p.m. PST Wednesday with a 3.8 magnitude quake in northwestern Nevada, just south of the Oregon border, according to USGS records.

The strongest of the quakes - magnitude 4.5 - struck at 1:16 a.m.

The sparsely populated area has seen swarms of small earthquakes since July that scientists say can be traced to the constant stretching of the Earth's crust, The Associated Press reports.
